Genzyme Genetics Competitive Scholarship

The Genzyme Genetics Competitive Scholarship is available only to Cytogenetics students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Several scholarships are available each academic year.
Eligibility Criteria
- Admission to the B.S. in Cytogenetics or Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
- Entering overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater
Selection Criteria
- Previous academic performance
- Knowledge of and commitment to the profession of Cytogenetics
- Evidence of organizational skills and attention to detail
- Authorization to work within the United States
Application and Selection Procedures
Applicants for the Genzyme Genetics Competitive Scholarship must:
- Complete and submit the Genzyme Genetics Competitive Scholarship Application, available from Ms. Betty Dunn
- Complete and submit a one-page essay on why the student wishes to pursue a career in Cytogenetics
- Submit copies of college/university transcripts (official transcripts are not necessary)
- Participate in a selection interview, if invited
Scholarship Award
The scholarship consists of a competitive scholarship award of $1,000 towards tuition and fees for the degree or certificate program. Scholarship funds will be divided equally between fall, spring, and summer semesters. In addition, scholarship recipients are eligible to apply directly to Genzyme Genetics for a secondary scholarship of $9,000 to cover the remainder of tuition, fees, books, and supplies, plus a monthly stipend. The monthly stipend will vary from approximately $500 per month while enrolled in the academic program at UTHSCSA (Fall semester and July) to approximately $1000 per month while on clinical rotation at Genzyme Genetics in Santa Fe, New Mexico (Spring semester, May, and June). Secondary scholarship funds and stipend payments are made directly to the scholarship recipient by Genzyme Genetics. The entire scholarship and supplemental award package totals approximately $18,500 per student.
Conditions of Award
Students awarded the Genzyme Genetics Competitive Scholarship are required to perform their clinical rotation at Genzyme Genetics in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Upon receiving an offer of at-will employment with Genzyme Genetics in Santa Fe following graduation, secondary scholarship recipients must also agree to remain employed by Genzyme for a period of two years following graduation. Secondary scholarship recipients will also have certain repayment obligations if they do not complete the post-baccalaureate or degree program, or if they fail to remain employed with Genzyme for a period of two years following graduation.
